Special Service Items for Your Household Goods Move

If you are moving appliances or special items, there are several things to consider. Like Meatloaf famously sang “I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that”, there are services our movers can’t provide as a result of liability, regardless how much we’d prefer to help. In such cases, you have two options. Let us to coordinate a third-party service provider to service these items, or you can prepare them yourself. Below, are some details on some typical specialty items, making it easy for you to determine which solution works for you.

Moving Appliances

Moving your appliances is no problem for us. But, the disconnection and reconnection process warrant expertise aside from what moving companies offer. Below are some recommendations for the most frequently moved appliances:

  • Refrigerators– If it’s connected to a water line, that line will need to be disconnected. When moving your refrigerator, remember to disconnect it at least 48 hours in advance. You will need to keep the doors open, and put a towel on the floor. It will absorb any water as your refrigerator and freezer defrost. Keep an eye on the towel and change, as needed, depending on how much moisture it absorbs (plus avoid any possible water damage to your floor!)
  • Top Load Washing Machine- As luck would have it, top load washers are clear-cut. All that’s required is to disconnect the waterline.
  • Front Load Washers– Front load machines require extra care when moving them. Being the interior drum is suspended inside, a stabilizer kit is essential to secure the drum in place. Moving a front load washing machine without securing the drum with a stabilizer kit is certain to ruin your appliance. Fortunately, these kits are usually inexpensive, accessible and easily installed.
    • I already have the stabilizer kit– These are also referred to as “shipping bolts”. It is likely that when your washing machine was delivered, the company left these bolts behind. If this is the case, a quick online search of your exact model washer will provide details on how to reinstall the kit.
    • I need a kit– A website such as repairclinic.com offers most kits. Just type in the make and model of your washer, and order the kit needed for your exact model. Generally speaking, most kits range from $30-$60.
    • You might want to contact the company where you purchased your washing machine. It is common for the installers and delivery crew to set up the washer, remove the stabilizer kit and take them with them. Many companies will advise how to obtain a new kit for your exact model.

Clothes Dryers- Providing you have an electric dryer, all you need to do is unplug it! Gas dryers, on the other hand, require additional attention. The gas line to the residence has to be disconnected and capped. Whenever working with gas, it’s important to really recognize your personal skills and whether this is something you’re confident you can handle on your own.

Specialty Beds

While disassembly and reassembly of standard beds is part of the service you can expect from Corrigan, specialty beds are often beyond the capabilities of what moving companies can provide. Aside from moving appliances, specialty beds are the next most common item requiring special services. Here are some common specialty beds and how to service them.

Cribs– Due to ever-changing liability and baby products, moving companies don’t disassemble or reassemble cribs. If you prefer to disassemble your crib on your own, below are a few tips:

  • When possible, have the same person who assembled the crib disassemble it, that is ideal. Since they already have the knowledge of putting it together, taking it apart should be much easier!
  • The crib doesn’t need to be fully taken apart. Disassembling into pieces small enough to fit through a doorway is all that is needed.
  • Take a picture of the crib before it is disassembled, and close-ups of the crib through the project. That way, you will remember where everything goes along with the location of screws when reassembling it.
  • Be sure to keep and label all parts and screws. Placing items in a zip lock bag and packing them somewhere you’ll remember is important.

Bunk Beds– Also due to liability, Corrigan does not disassemble bunk beds. Depending on the complexity of your bed, you may choose to take this on yourself. The initial step would be to do an internet search for the exact make and model of the bed to see if there’s a video showing the disassembly steps.

Memory Foam Mattresses– Memory foam, or the ever popular “bed in a box”, must be boxed and transported laying down. Your move representative will most likely to ask you if your bed is a memory foam or spring mattress. Memory foam mattresses do not require special services, but we do place them in a box instead of a mattress bag. This ensures the mattress to keep its shape during the transportation process.

Sleep Number Mattress– Sleep number beds require service prior to moving. While some of these beds simply require unplugging and letting the air chambers deflate, others demand more involved services. Sleep Number provides this resource to best guide you based on the exact model of your bed.

Exercise Equipment

Treadmills– Given your treadmill will fold, then we will likely be able to move it while folded without additional disassembly. On the other hand, if your treadmill is downstairs, in the basement or needs moved up or down stairs, consider the width of your stairwell. If there’s a bend in the stairs or it is too close, your treadmill will need to be disassembled to move. Also, take into consideration where the treadmill will be placed in your new home. It might go up the stairs at your current home, but maybe not at your new home. Make certain to measure both sets of stairs ahead of moving.

Elliptical Machines- Due to the bulkiness and awkward weight distribution, almost all ellipticals will need to be disassembled. Typically, removing the arms is enough to make the unit moveable. A quick web search of your product should offer details on how to remove the arms.

Pelotons- We have experienced a huge uptick in Peloton and video screen stationary cycles over the last 2 years. The video screens and various parts have to be removed and correctly packed in order to safely move the bike. It’s advised to check with Peloton to ensure disassembling it does not harm the warranty. If this is the case, request recommendations or if they provide this service.

Additional Items

Grandfather clocks– The pendulum and weights need to be removed and attentively packed prior to moving the clock. Wearing gloves is a must when handling the weights; the smallest fingerprint may throw off the timing.

Wall Mounted TVs– Movers cannot remove objects screwed to the walls. The most familiar wall mounted item is the TV. Once removed, Corrigan is able to pack the TV or you can pack it back in the original box. TV boxes are also available for purchase to ensure proper protection during transport.

Corrigan will do anything for our customers, even that!

Do not hesitate if you need to move appliances or specialty items as part of your household goods move. Corrigan can certainly arrange any needed third-party services for you; we deal with local and nationwide companies that specialize in this type of service. We can also include the cost of their services into your quote from Corrigan, eliminating the need to pay another company (though you are able to provide payment directly to the third-party company, if you prefer.) Corrigan invariably has your best interest at heart. There may be services moving companies can’t provide, but when it comes to our customers – we’ll do anything for you!

*Corrigan recommends consulting with the product’s manufacture in advance of trying to disassemble or reassemble any household goods or specialty items on your own. Failure to service items accurately for transporting may result in damage and product failure.
