As industry leaders, we are here to share our knowledge for a stress-free relocation.

When Listing Your Home

What is a realtor’s favorite expression? Declutter! While listing your house, your realtor can give you tips for staging and making your home look sale-ready. The following are some tips from homeowners and how Corrigan Moving can support!

  1. Free boxes for decluttering! Did you know that Corrigan customers can receive free used boxes when booking their move*? When available, our customers can acquire various sized boxes for free. Corrigan’s offices also stock a line-up of moving supplies for purchase, such as packing paper, bubble wrap and tape. Start packing and decluttering before your realtor takes your house photos and make your house shine in the pictures. Many customers call Corrigan and reserve a move date prior to listing their homes for this reason. Dates can be changed once your house is under contract, so leverage as many advantages as you are able!
  2. Garage a mess? Wardrobe boxes may be your solution! Wardrobe boxes are large and tall, perfect for holding oversized belongings. You can leave the top of the wardrobe box open to organize and store children’s toys, sports equipment and long handled yard tools. This will make your garage look cleaner and larger with little effort! Click here for more about wardrobe boxes.
  3. Fix your walls like a pro. If you have nail holes or painted walls needing to be touched up, be sure to do repair work prior to your real-estate pictures. Do you need to match paint colors? Using a utility knife (be careful!), carefully remove a quarter size piece from the top layer of paint. It’s best to do this from a discreet place, such as behind furniture or a low corner. Taking that small paint swatch to your local hardware store or paint shop, where they have the tools to match your paint color perfectly. With a drywall patch kit, repair your holes and then paint with your matching touch up paint. Good as new! Here is a sample demonstration of how to get the perfect paint swatch.

During Showings

Once your house is listed, you’ll spend time away to let others walk through and imagine themselves living there. Several homeowners who have used Corrigan Moving have shared tips that make those time away during showings easier.

  1. Pack a suitcase. Many homeowners want to have their valuable items or personal documents hidden away. Many customers have found packing a small suitcase with these items to be an easy way to grab and go during a showing.
  2. Consider a local pet daycare. Cats and dogs will also need a place to stay during showings. Finding a local doggy daycare or daily pet care facility is a great solution to keep your pets happy and safe.
  3. Entertain the kids! Parents know getting children out the door can be a challenge. Packing a backpack with small toys, games or art supplies can be a great way to keep kids entertained and happy when away from home.
  4. Free, free, free! Find free ways to pass the time during showings. When showings are planned back-to-back, you’re likely to find yourself gone for hours at a time. Visiting your local park, farmers market, or libraries are free and easy ways to pass time. If you are moving nearby, consider booking a guided tour throughout your new city. Even if you are no stranger with your new town, you might be surprised by learning new and interesting history!

Offer: Accepted!

Bravo! Once your home is under contract, the real work begins. If you have not contacted Corrigan Moving yet for an in-home or virtual estimate, now is the time! Your local sales representative will develop a customized move quote based on the services you’re wanting. Following are some things to consider prior to your move consultation.

  1. Decide who’s packing. Corrigan Moving offers full packing service. We also can provide packing on a smaller scale, such as packing only mattresses, TVs or fragile items. Decide if there’s anything you want Corrigan to pack or if you will handle the packing yourself before your move consultant arrives. For more details on packing yourself, click here.
  2. Decide what is you’re moving. Having a plan for items to move before your move survey is essential to acquiring an accurate estimate. The sales representative will go room by room through your home to establish a complete and inclusive inventory to accurately estimate the extent of your move. Your move inventory can always be changed, nonetheless you will want to have a clear understanding of what items you want handled by Corrigan.
  3. Select donation locations. If you have items you prefer to donate, investigate local thrift stores and secondhand shops. Many provide free pickup services for donated items, however these can be booked weeks in advance. Plan ahead and schedule a donation pickup before your move date. Corrigan supports Habitat for Humanity, who has several locations offering free donation pick up.
  4. Research what can and cannot be moved. Moving companies cannot transport items such as gasoline containers, chemicals or anything caustic (a comprehensive list of prohibited items can be found here). Your city may have resources or a local return drive where they will accept hazardous items and electronics for proper disposal. Waste Management has more information for properly disposing your hazardous household items.

Suggested items include, might be toilet paper, paper towels and plates, plastic utensils and bar soap. Having a small new activity, like a coloring book or puzzle for kids is a perfect way to keep them entertained as you’re settling in. Don’t forget a new toy or treats for Whiskers and Fido!
  3. Order delivery! Your first meal in your new home is one to remember. Begin making memories by ordering in from a local restaurant and enjoy exploring new places to dine.
